Algebra Q#8

0. Suppose, y varies as the sum of two quantities of which one varies directly as x and the other inversely as x.If y= 6 when x=4 and when x = 3, then the relation between x and y is

  • Option : A
  • Explanation : Let y = a + b, where a∝x and b∝1/x.
    Let a = K1x and b=K2/x.
    where K1 and K2 are constants.
    y = K1 x+ K2/x . .. (i).
    Given, y = 6 when x = 4.
    6 = K14 + K2/4.
    ⇒16K1 + K2 = 24 . .. (ii)
    Also,  when x = 3 .
    ⇒10/3 = 3K1 + K2/3
    ⇒9K1 + K2 = 10 . .. (iii)
    From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get
    K1 = 2 and K2 = - 8.
    y=2x-8/x .
